Welcome to the Warmth

Spring is starting to appear in our yard, and I am very excited for it.

Picture 2

We love cherry blossoms (we even had them as the theme of our wedding!), and were lucky enough to buy a house where the tree in the back blooms thick with them each spring. They are delicate things that don’t last long, so we try to enjoy them before they float down to the ground and dissolve back into the earth.

If we have been quiet lately, it is not because we’ve forgotten you! It’s because we have been very busy—busy with spring and printing and planning. There have been birthdays to celebrate, fresh vegetables to cook, and new ideas to ponder. We will have some announcements to share soon. In the meantime, I hope your weather has been as pretty as ours, and that you are able to come out of your winter slumber to embrace it.

Don’t you want to scoop up two or three and stake them in various pots around the house for happy little reminders at random? We love tiny touches like that—little bits around the house that make you smile. That’s what makes a house a home, you know?

The Day We Printed Something for Southern Living Magazine

A few months ago, Southern Living magazine approached us about printing a piece for their March issue. Of course we were thrilled, and said yes just as quickly as we could. As it turned out, quick became the name of the game, because the magazine needed the piece, a tag that was going to be wrapped around a vase with a pretty ribbon for a photo shoot, in a jiffy. Before we knew it, we were express-ordering plates and printing just a day later. The pieces were in our studio for less than 24 hours before they were rushed to the magazine in time for the shoot!

Then, just like all their loyal readers, we had to wait and wait until the issue came out to see the shot. Seeing our paper product all dolled up in their pretty ribbon and styled so perfectly was so neat! The March issue is beautiful and bright, just what we need for this dreary February we’re having. I encourage you to grab a copy off newsstands for yourself. For those of you who don’t live in the South or don’t have access to an issue, click the image above for a PDF of the cover and page we’re mentioned on.

As a fun bonus, the magazine is offering the tag as a free download—click here to get a copy for yourself!

Happy Goes to California

news

We’ve been mum on our big news, but I think we can finally spread the word: Happy Penguin Press is going to be in a store near you! Or one store, to be precise. We’re honored and excited to have work included in Oh, Hello Friend’s new retail space opening in Fullerton, California. If you aren’t familiar with Oh, Hello Friend, you have time before they open to run (digitally) over to Danni’s online spot and take it all in. She has an incredible eye for vintage decor/finds and positive, inspiring words. In the meantime, please mark your calendars for the opening of her store on February 2:

Busy Bees

If you follow us on Instagram, then you already know how busy we’ve been lately printing our new cards for spring. Here’s a peek into our world the past few weeks. (And if you’d like to start following us, we’re at “happypenguinpress.” See you there!)

Snow in Birmingham

When we first moved to Birmingham, AL, people kept saying to us: “Oh, it never snows here.” This was always their response when they learned where we’d just moved from: Pittsburgh, PA. From lots of snow to no snow, or so we thought. Though it hasn’t happened every year, there have been a good number of little “Southern blizzards” as I’ll call them, during our time here. As luck would have it, January 17 was one such day.

Snow always means pictures, at least for me. Other than my time in Pittsburgh, I’ve spent my life in Southern California and in the South, neither of which gets consistent snowfall. When it does happen, I can’t resist the urge to document it. The above shot was taken in an office building I was in when it began to come down.

In the first hours that the snow fell, things were quiet and white. The world took on that glowing hue that happens when the light bounces off the fresh snow. I love that moment, when everything is soft and still except for the puff of falling, frozen water.

Scout, though, was less than enthused. She’s seen snow before, when she was a puppy, and would have been more enthusiastic if there’d been enough to run around and scoop up into her mouth. Our yard got very little though (we live outside the city, and it mainly hit there). Instead, she spent her time outside trying to figure out what was on her favorite blue ball (ice).

What a concerned face! She never could decide if it was okay to touch it in that condition or not. Poor dear. I couldn’t really help her; all I could do was laugh.

Color Crush

happylittlenote

It’s no secret that we love the color blue around here. From one of the first cards we printed (above) to our collaboration with Meme Davis (below), we somehow always find ourselves back at blue (and its cousin, green) when we’re printing.

mercibeaucoup

We’ve made a conscious effort lately not to fight this urge. We want our work to be contemporary but speak true to us, and heck, there’s no denying that we like muted colors around here. (You probably won’t be surprised to learn that the color palette of our studio and home are very similar to our cards.)

So when I found a fun Tumblr site today called Pantone Solid Uncoated—basically a catalog of Pantone shades—I had to laugh when I kept opening the same shade of blue at different times, all without realizing it.

Now, Bryan would argue that this shade isn’t blue per se. It’s green. I’d argue that it’s both, a blue-green tone that reminds me of my childhood in San Diego, probably because it evokes the sea. It’s cheery and bright without being overbearing. It can be green to Bryan and blue to me, and we can agree to disagree about it. We’re like that with colors. Like our design tastes, decorating tastes, and even our tastes in food, we’re constantly evolving. Who knows, maybe a few years from now we’ll try on something more bold, a la Kate Spade, and surprise you with a whole new color shade of choice.

What about you? Got any colors you’re hooked on? We’d love to hear!
